A Boston interior design education is about creativity. After all, Boston is the Number 1 Innovative City in the United States, "on the cutting edge of finding, inventing, and capitalizing on everything hot and new." Since one in three Bostonians is between the ages of 20 and 34, Boston is also the youngest city in the country. This is the place to study design.
Interior design incorporates the conceptual development, planning, and execution of projects which transform the interior space of both commercial and residential buildings. Interior designers must possess a mixture of artistic instincts and technical skills. Online master’s degrees in interior design will seek to develop these creative instincts while providing a foundation in the basic architectural and engineering concepts necessary to oversee the design and construction of projects. Graduates of a program like this may seek employment as part of a design firm or opt to start their own design company. Some designers may specialize in commercial or residential projects, though many will work on both.
Students can expect homework to include readings, model building, the creation of design plans, research projects, and presentations. Students will also be expected to demonstrate their skills in practical applications and executing their models and plans in studio workshops throughout the program. Depending on the school’s specific curriculum, an internship and/or capstone project may be required for graduation. Given the hands-on nature of this type of curriculum, most programs in interior design will require at least some on-campus component.

In addition to learning about renewable resources, you’ll become a pro on how to design spaces to use less energy and maximize existing resources. You’ll also become adept at designing spaces that stand the test of time and meet the needs of all users so that they don’t have to be torn down and re-built within a few years. What’s more, with faculty specializing in various areas relating to sustainability and universal design such as aging in place you can fine-tune your studies. Choose from two degree programs.
