For over 40 years, the Interior Design Department has offered courses to individuals interested in preparing for careers in the professional fields of interior design with an emphasis in Sustainable and Kitchen & Bath Design. Included in the program are a transfer program, an AS degree, and five certificate programs. Our faculty members, who are experts in their specific fields of design, are passionate about sharing their expertise with the students of the program.
Canadian interior design education can be acquired through the college or university level. Unlike the programs offered in the United States , a degree is not required to become a registered professional designer. Admission to programs marks and creative ability as demonstrated in a portfolio submission. Once accepted into a program, seven years of combined educational and work experience is required before one can take the professional examination to become a registered interior designer. Therefore, if someone graduates from a three-year college diploma program, they will need a minimum of four years working experience, whereas someone graduating from a four year degree program only needs three.
Interior design students have multiple opportunities to network with professionals in our region and make valuable career contacts. The ID Program is the home of the student chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) which have liaisons to the professional chapters in both the Kansas City and Wichita areas. In addition, some interior design students with an interest in hospitality design join the NEWH Hospitality Industry Network and connect with professionals from the Dallas chapter. Interior Design
