The Interior Design major at California State University, Sacramento is one of the most highly sought after programs in Northern California and is designated as an impacted program. Students entering the program are initially classified as Pre-Interior Design Majors. After completing the required lower division prerequisites, students may apply for admission to the upper division program by declaring their concentration in either Interior Architecture or Interior Design Marketing. Admission to the Interior Architecture concentration is limited and controlled by an annual portfolio review. Students interested in this concentration must submit a supplementary application including a portfolio of work.
Successful completion of each Interior Design(ID) course earns full college credit. Students who complete the required Interior Design, Art, Art History and Drafting courses and controlled electives earn a Certificate of Achievement in Interior Design. Those who also complete institutional and General Education course requirements earn the Associate in Arts Degree in Interior Design. Courses are offered with an open enrollment policy; they are open to both ID majors and non-majors.
In the United States many universities and colleges offer four year baccalaureate degrees in Interior Design. Some design colleges also offer Interior Design program as stand-alone program. Masters degrees (MS, MA, MFA and recently the MID) in Interior Design are also available, although this advanced degree is less common than the baccalaureate degree.
