Interior Design Courses (INTDSGN) University Of Northern Iowa
The PCC Board of Governors has inactivated this program. No new students will be admitted to the program. Courses towards this degree will be offered until Spring 2015. Individual Interior Design classes will be offered beyond that semester, but the degree will no longer be awarded.
The undergraduate major in interior design is a four-year professional program accredited by the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design. The program develops students' creativity in the design and planning of interior spaces by emphasizing the process and communication of design. Students learn to integrate the art of design with the social sciences concerning the interaction of people and their environment, the history of design, and the physical sciences relating to the effects of materials on the physical health and comfort of inhabitants. Insight into professional practice is enhanced through internship experiences.
After students have gotten an education, many go on to complete one- to three-year internship programs to prepare for the licensure exam required by 23 states. In states with these licensure requirements, students must have completed at least two years of college education in interior design before taking the exam. Once the license has been earned, continuing education is often necessary to keep it. Many distance learning schools offer online interior design programs, which allow students to earn the credentials they need at their convenience.
The Interior Design program prepares students for careers in interior design and space planning with state-of-the-art facilities and the latest industry software. The coursework for the interior design program includes solving interior design-related problems by developing free-hand and drafting skills, computers skills and oral presentation skills. Graduates will be familiar with local and national trade, professional and industry resources. Issues in sustainable design are also explored within the studio environment.
